Field Notes: Second Gigs — and We’ve Got One for You
Thirty-five years in this business teaches you something: good hands are hard to find and worth holding onto. We’re looking for a pair. The work is there, we’ve got a steady pipeline of custom awning projects, real fabrication work, the kind that requires skill and attention.
We just need the right hands a few days a week.
Which got us thinking about second gigs.
In skilled trades, a second gig has never really been a hustle. It’s always been something else, more like a way to keep it moving between seasons, pick up work that fits your schedule, or simply do something with your hands that a day job doesn’t always make room for. Upholsterers who take on marine canvas. Fabricators who spend weekends in a metal shop. Seamstresses who know their way around a walking foot machine and don’t need to be convinced that precision matters.
Project-based trade work is growing quietly but steadily. Specialty shops like ours increasingly need experienced hands for defined runs of work and not a 40-hour commitment, not a career pivot. Just skilled people who show up, know what they’re doing, and take the work seriously.
If that’s you, keep reading.
We’re not a showroom. We’re a shop and the people here take the craft seriously.
The Role: Industrial Sewing Specialist (Awnings)
Part-Time | Project-Based | Flexible Hours
We need someone experienced with heavy-duty materials and industrial sewing machines. This is precise, satisfying work — measuring, cutting, assembling custom awnings from canvas, vinyl, and similar fabrics, following shop drawings, and working alongside our fabrication team to get projects out the door right.
Walking foot machine experience is a plus. A background in trades, fabrication, upholstery, or marine canvas is exactly the kind of thing that translates here.
